IN VICTORIA, the river red gum forests that line the Murray could soon be protected in a string of new national parks, but it's a different story in NSW. Here, the logging continues, with much of the timber being trucked across the border to provide sleepers for Victorian railway lines.

After failed negotiations with the NSW Government to stop the logging on private and public land, the National Parks Association of NSW started legal action in the state's Land and Environment Court late on Monday, challenging the legality of river red gum logging in state forests.

Not that I agree about being a so called "Tree-hugger" it's just so sad to hear about the NSW action towards the River Red Gum - probably because I hold Significance to that tree and because it occurs naturally in the plain areas locally. I like to feel that "Waltzing Matilda" to it as well as the Coolabah tree mention within!
